House Training Your Puppy? Get the Essentials First?
No doubt about it, the day you bring home your new puppy is certainly a happy one. It's not unusual for families to celebrate the day as one would a birthday - after all, a new pet is part of the family and should be treated as such. To assume responsibility for what is essentially a baby, too, requires immediate attention to details. House training, of course, is a priority.

Dog Breeds – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The “Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,” named after King Charles II, was the result of a cross between the King Charles Spaniel and the Pug in the late 1600s, resulting in a smaller dog with a flatter nose, rounded head, and bulging eyes. Their predecessors have longer, pointier noses and were often featured in the paintings of [...]

World War II Museum Presents Animals of War PetsInTouch.com New Orleans - Smoky the Yorkshire terrier, Lady Astor the pigeon and a host of horses and mules whose individual stories are lost to history are among war heroes and heroines featured in the latest exhibit at the National World War II Museum. “Loyal Force: Animals at War†will run July 22-Oct. 17, featuring the four kinds of animals most often brought into the war. “There was a great love and loyalty between the soldiers and the animals they worked with,†said registrar Toni M. Kiser, who created the exhibit with archivist Lindsey Barnes. The exhibit opener may seem odd to people used to thinking of the Coast Guard as offshore duty in cutters, patrol boats, he...

Fluorescence Shed New Light
A lot has changed about the way researchers study sexual selection and reproduction. Some of it has to do with new tools; some of it has to do with new attitudes. There is a lot more going on than just "sperm meets egg". "It was simply thought of as "this army of sperm competing," so it functioned as a raffle; the more tickets you bought, the more sperm you transferred, the more likely you were to win out in that competition," explains Scott Pitnick, a professor of biology at Syracuse University. "Females were perceived as these passive vessels in which this competition played out--that females didn't play an active role. That's really not the case.".......

Considerations When Preparing a Horse Stall For Foaling Applications
If you have a mare that is due to foal and you have decided to use a foaling stall, then there are some important considerations that you must acknowledge prior to the event of foaling down indoors. Nature has always allowed mares to foal outside in a place where the mare felt most secure and was able to give birth without any predators to contend with. Nowadays, we tend to manage the birthing of horses and therefore the foaling stall is something that has become common practice with many horse breeders.

Dog Breed of the Week: Siberian Husky
I chose the Siberian Husky as the breed of the week in honor of Bear-Bear, the Husky fatally shot in a Maryland dog park last week. My heart goes out to all of those who knew and loved Bear-Bear. Huskies are often thought of as sled dogs, and this is actually how they originated. But today's Husky is so much more than this. Overall, this breed absolutely loves to work, can sustain colder temperatures, and is quite skilled at companionship. Has your pet been sneezing or coughing these last few days?
Grass pollen has been pretty high lately. The high temperatures may make us all think of the threats of dehydration, but Dr. Chau did a little research today based on the high number of coughing pets she's seen recently and noticed that grass pollen is reaching high levels. http://www.pollen.com/allergy-forecast.asp As we noted in earlier posts, allergies are very common in pets. It's among the top 5 reasons pets are taken to vets. Like humans, pets can be allergy tested and then given shots that can alleviate their symptoms. The approaching rain is going to wash out some of the pollen, but already Sunday is looking to be the worst day of the week. http://www.pollen.com/historic-pollen-levels.asp Aaron Family Veterinary Hospital of Stone Ridge www.family-vet.com 703 327-8425 Posts...

Bearded Gobies to the Rescue
The bearded goby is an ecological superhero. In less than five decades, this six-inch fish managed to revive an entire marine ecosystem—one that had careened to the brink of collapse. Now scientists are beginning to unravel how the bearded goby stabilized the communities around it and capitalized on conditions seemingly too harsh for life. Off the coast of southwest Africa there lies a region where strong ocean currents periodically churn nutrients from deeper waters producing what's known as the Benguela Upwelling. This upwelling of nutrients promotes the growth of plankton which, in turn, provides a rich supply of food that fuels an entire food web. Cat Picture of the Week: Tamira
A "street" cat had a litter of kittens in a drain pipe near the college I attended 13 years ago. The mother for some reason left her kittens whilst they were still too young - someone found the kittens and took them to the nearest pet shop. Tamira ended up being the only one left-a student walked past the pet shop and felt sorry for the lonely looking kitten and bought it out of pity, however she could not keep it as she was allergic. She brought it to the college and I ended up with the kitty (could almost fit into my hand). I kept her and 13 years later she's still my best friend. What a lovely story, and what a lovely cat! I do hope that Charlene and Tamira will have many happy years left together. Tamira's story first appeared in the Domestic Cats Show & Tell Gallery, as wi...
